The Peebles RBS ATM Ram Raid happened around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at the Royal Bank of Scotland branch in the Eastgate area of Peebles, Scottish Borders. Police Scotland reported that a grey Audi, a grey Isuzu D-Max pickup towing a horsebox, and a Manitou telehandler entered the area. The telehandler was used to ram the building and remove two ATMs, which were then loaded into the horsebox. The pickup and horsebox had previously been reported stolen, while the telehandler was also believed to have been stolen and was abandoned at the scene.
Three male suspects wearing dark clothing were seen leaving in the Audi and pickup towards Northgate. Police are reviewing CCTV and have asked for private CCTV, doorbell and dashcam footage that could help establish the vehicles’ movements before and after the incident.
Why ATM Security Needs Early Detection
A ram raid can develop very quickly, particularly during the early morning when bank premises may have limited staff presence. CCTV recordings can provide important evidence after an incident, but detecting unusual activity while it is happening can provide an additional layer of protection.
This is where AI video analytics can support ATM and branch security.
How CAPASai Can Help Protect ATM Locations
CAPASai can continuously analyze video feeds and IoT data to identify predefined security events and provide actionable alerts.
- Continuous Surveillance: CAPASai continuously analyzes video feeds and IoT data, including during overnight periods when a branch may be unattended.
- Vehicle and Intrusion Detection: AI can be configured around specific security use cases, helping identify unusual vehicle activity, unauthorized access, perimeter breaches and activity near ATM areas. CAPASai
- Human-in-the-Loop Validation: Critical alerts can go through HIL validation to help verify the event and reduce false positives before the relevant team is alerted.
- Instant Alerts: Once validated, an alert can be delivered with video evidence and relevant IoT information, giving security teams the context needed to respond quickly.
- Evidence and Investigation: Associated video clips and data can support incident investigation, helping teams review what happened and examine vehicle movements or other relevant activity. CAPASai
- Security Reporting: AI-powered reporting and analytics can bring events together across multiple branches, helping financial organizations identify recurring security patterns and improve their overall security strategy.
The Peebles incident highlights how quickly a targeted ATM attack can cause significant physical damage and financial loss. Combining existing security measures with AI-powered video analytics can help financial institutions improve awareness of suspicious activity and respond to critical events more efficiently.
