In the early hours of September 26, 2026, a business in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood became the target of a crash-and-grab burglary. Chicago police said a dark-colored Jeep crashed into the front of a business in the 2300 block of North Clark Street shortly after 2:40 a.m. The suspects then entered the damaged storefront, removed an ATM and escaped in another vehicle. No injuries were reported, and area detectives were investigating.
The incident is an example of a retail-security challenge that happens outside normal business hours. When a store is closed and employees are not present, there may be little opportunity for someone on-site to notice unusual activity as it develops.
When Storefronts Become the First Point of Attack
The physical damage caused by a vehicle can be immediate, but the security event begins before the ATM is removed. A vehicle approaching the property, entering a restricted area or striking the storefront can all become important moments for security teams.
This is where intelligent video analytics can extend the usefulness of existing surveillance.
CAPASai for Smarter After-Hours Monitoring
CAPASai can analyze CCTV feeds and IoT data continuously, allowing businesses to configure monitoring around events that are relevant to their properties. This can be particularly useful for environments where activity needs to be observed even when employees are not physically present. CAPASai CCTV Video Analytics
Rather than treating nighttime surveillance as footage to examine only after a break-in, CAPASai can help organizations identify relevant events and provide information while an incident is developing.
Its capabilities include:
- Continuous analysis of video and IoT data for configured events, anomalies and operational issues.
- Detection based on predefined use cases relevant to each location.
- Human-in-the-Loop validation for critical alerts before escalation.
- Alerts containing relevant video evidence and IoT data to provide context.
- Stored footage and data that can support evidence collection and subsequent investigation. CAPASai CCTV Video Analytics
- Reporting and analytics that allow organizations to review events across locations and identify recurring security concerns.
These capabilities can give businesses a broader view of activity around their properties, including events that occur outside regular operating hours. CAPASai CCTV Video Analytics CAPASai AI-Powered CAPA Software
The Lincoln Park ATM theft also comes amid a series of similar crash-and-grab incidents reported across Chicago, although authorities have not said whether this particular case is connected to those incidents.
For retailers and other businesses, the lesson is broader than protecting an ATM. Security needs to account for what can happen when the store is empty, the doors are locked and there is no employee watching the entrance.
AI video analytics can help businesses maintain that visibility when their physical presence is limited.
