$600K Copper Wire Theft

A shipment of copper wire worth nearly $600,000 became the target of an alleged interstate theft involving fraudulent transportation arrangements. According to Engineering News-Record, a trailer was stolen on September 10, 2026, in Oak Forest, Illinois, and was allegedly used to fraudulently collect six pallets of copper wire reels from a freight loading company in DeKalb, Illinois. The shipment, originally destined for Rock Hill, South Carolina, was diverted to Prestonsburg, Kentucky, where investigators recovered the copper within eight hours of the theft being reported.

The incident demonstrates how cargo theft can extend beyond a single facility. Once valuable materials enter the supply chain, protecting them requires visibility across loading areas, transportation movements and receiving locations.

Protecting Valuable Materials Across the Supply Chain with CAPASai

For businesses handling high-value materials, surveillance can play a role at several points, not just at the location where goods are stored.

CAPASai brings together AI-powered video analytics and IoT data to provide businesses with greater visibility into activity across their monitored environments. Instead of relying solely on footage after an incident, organizations can configure the system around events and conditions that matter to their operations. CAPASai CCTV Video Analytics

CAPASai can help businesses:

  • Monitor continuously: CCTV feeds and IoT data are analyzed for configured events, anomalies and operational issues. CAPASai CCTV Video Analytics
  • Recognize relevant activity: AI identifies activity that matches predefined use cases for a particular site.
  • Validate critical alerts: Human-in-the-Loop (HIL) validation can review critical events before escalation.
  • Provide context: Alerts can include relevant video evidence and IoT data, helping teams understand an event without manually searching through footage.
  • Support investigations: Stored video and associated data can assist with evidence collection and incident review.
  • Identify broader patterns: Reporting and analytics can bring events together across sites, helping organizations recognize recurring issues and trends. CAPASai CCTV Video Analytics

The Illinois-to-Kentucky case also highlights the importance of visibility beyond a single location. Investigators were able to trace the stolen shipment across state lines and recover the copper after it had been diverted.

For companies moving valuable materials, security is therefore not limited to protecting a warehouse or loading dock. It involves understanding what is happening across the points where goods are stored, loaded, moved and received.

AI video analytics can add another layer of intelligence to that environment, helping businesses turn surveillance data into information that supports security teams before, during and after an incident. CAPASai CCTV Video Analytics

When valuable materials move across locations, visibility needs to move with them.
